I agree. It is important not only to speak out but also to speak out specifically against the hatred which is consuming our communities. Recently, Mandami engaged in some political posturing and immediately, a seemingly unbalanced man stabbed two people, one of whom was a jewish man leaving his synagogue. We need to stop baiting one another, making fun of one another, disparaging one another because when we do that, we lower our own humanity as well as the humanity of others. We have to stop encouraging violence. Our speech and our actions have serious consequences. Our political leadership is severely wanting, we cannot look towards Washington for an example of good behavior. We cannot look to our legislators, our courts, our comedians, our usual suspects. At this time, we can look only to ourselves. We have to behave, to become adults, to listen to one another in a mature way. If we care about ourselves, about one another, about the society in which we live, we can save that society from the violence and the desecration we are experiencing. Let us say enough to hate and let us make room for civil discourse.
You're absolutely right, but I'll add a bit of nuance. I think it's hard to appeal to folks to be mature, decent, kind, etc, especially when many feel like that hasn't been and won't be reciprocated. What we have to say is that there's a level of hate and hateful bigotry and endorsement of violence that must be absolutely unacceptable, and punish people accordingly who violate those TABOOS so others understand where the guardrails are to be part of polite society. I subscribed to the Michael Fanone substack podcasts and messages for 3 months believing that he was a decent man who had protected us J6 and wouldn't let the people who hate the American Way escape without well researched disclosure. Much of this was true, but he clearly espouses an anti-AIPAC position without regard to an issue and has no problem stating that Israel is a colonial power practicing apartheid and genocide. He also urged his followers to denounce further military aid and cooperation between the U.S. and Israel. I am well educated on diffusing these myths with facts and finally did so this week by posting to his site. Only 1 person liked my message, 2 people used ad hominem attacks laced with obscenities completely lacking any intellectually based counterpoints to my post to dispose of my position (they also blocked me), and I estimate that approximately 100 of his followers used the words colonial, apartheid, and/or genocide in describing why Zionists, Israelis, and I suppose most Jews who are not self-loathing as well no matter what they think need to be eliminated from U.S. support, cooperation, and collaboration (possibly even participation in political dialogue and processes). Although I know that this is out there, it was stunning to be on the receiving end of this. After 3 days of firing off responses and offers to discuss their misunderstandings, I decided to cancel my subscription. Did I punk out? I was getting nowhere.
